Upcoming Vaping Forums at Charlevoix, Boyne City schools

Charlevoix Middle High School and Boyne City High School will each hold an upcoming community forum on "Vaping," as well as other risky teen behaviors. In recent months, the trend of teen vaping has become a growing concern for school leaders around Northwest Michigan. Vaping contains many harmful chemicals, including nicotine. Vaping devices continue to change as well, making it challenging for parents, caregivers and school administrators to stay on top of current trends. Please join us for a presentation by area experts and receive important resources.

MiPHY survey: Local youth substance use snapshot available in new survey report

Sept. 27, 2018 - Newly released survey results about youth substance use – including marijuana, alcohol, vaping and prescription drugs – provides a snapshot of teen behaviors in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties.
The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) survey, developed by the Michigan Department of Education, was administered to students in grades 7, 9 and 11 in local school districts during the 2017-18 school year. Not all school districts participate, but those who do help to compile a glimpse into substance-use concerns for preteens and teens. The anonymous survey asks students to identify which substances they have used within the past 30 days of the survey. Among the report's most concerning trends are a high number of students reporting they had vaped in the prior 30 days, and also a decrease in teens' perception of risk of harm in using marijuana. Marijuana Awareness Campaign

An important continuing SAFE campaign is related to the dangers of youth using marijuana. The accompanying 30-second Public Service Announcements (see link below) feature local youth educating others about the high levels of THC (main chemical in marijuana that causes the high) and the many changes in the makeup of current marijuana. This media campaign is being shared through digital ads, TV, radio, theaters, social media, billboards, banners and print ads. (540) 735-8887

Village of Bellaire joins growing list of tobacco-free communities

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan and SAFE in Northern Michigan recognizes the Village of Bellaire for its commitment to maintaining a healthy community. The Village Council recently passed a resolution prohibiting the use of all tobacco products—cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes— in its parks and beaches, with the exception of rented outdoor spaces including the Richardi Park Gazebo, Pavilion and Craven Park Campground. The Village of Bellaire joins many other local jurisdictions in Northern Michigan by banning tobacco use in designated public areas. “We want to congratulate Bellaire for going tobacco-free, and we encourage other jurisdictions to do the same,” said Amy Brown , Community Health Coordinator at the Health Department and SAFE in Northern Michigan coalition member. “Banning tobacco in these areas is a giant step forward in protecting the health of our communities and the environment.”
